What is a post-purchase upsell on Shopify?
Published
Short answer
A post-purchase upsell is an offer shown right after the customer pays, on Shopify’s post-purchase page, before the thank you page. The customer accepts it in one click: the product is added to the order they just placed and charged to the same payment method, without re-entering their card.
Where the post-purchase page sits in Shopify checkout
- The customer completes checkout and pays.
- Shopify shows the post-purchase page, where the post-purchase app displays its offer.
- The customer accepts or declines, then lands on the thank you page.
The post-purchase page is available on Basic Shopify and higher. Only one app can run it at a time: you choose it in Settings › Checkout, in the Post-purchase page section.
Post-purchase upsell vs other after-sale offers
| Offer | When | How the customer pays |
|---|---|---|
| Post-purchase upsell | Right after payment | One click, added to the same order and payment method |
| Thank you page upsell | On the order confirmation page | A new, pre-filled checkout for a second order |
| Post-purchase email | Later, in the customer’s inbox | A new checkout from the email |
How a post-purchase funnel works
With Sellify, a post-purchase upsell is a funnel of up to five steps:
- Up to three upsells in a row: when the customer accepts one, the next one is shown.
- Downsells: when the customer declines the first or second upsell, a different offer can take its place.
- Each step can show a countdown timer, images, text, a progress bar and free or paid shipping on the offer.
- A step can start with a one-question survey, such as “How did you hear about us?”, before the offer.
- Offers can include subscription products.
Shopify lets a customer accept at most three offers per checkout.
Which orders can get a post-purchase upsell
Shopify decides which orders reach the post-purchase page. It is skipped when:
- The customer paid with a gift card, an installment or wallet service (for example Klarna or Apple Pay), or another non-card method.
- The order is under $0.50.
- The order has duties or multiple currencies.
- The order was not placed through the Online Store.
If your page never appears, read why the Shopify post-purchase page is not showing.
